In the wake of a profound tragedy, the seeds of inspiration were sown for "Travesti," a deeply personal series of self-portraits. It was 2019 when I lost a dear friend, a vibrant soul who fell victim to hate in Brazil because he was gay. His untimely passing ignited a fire within me, compelling me to embark on a visual exploration of identity, resilience, and the evolving landscape of being gay in the year 2023.
This project delves into the complex and poignant questions that resonate in our hearts: Has acceptance truly grown, or does the specter of prejudice still loom large? Are the hard-fought rights of the LGBTQ+ community at risk in a world where progress often teeters on the edge? Can we truly feel protected and free to be ourselves, or do populist governments threaten to push us back into the shadows?
Through these self-portraits, I invite you to join me on a journey of introspection and defiance, a testament to the strength and courage of individuals who refuse to be silenced. "Travesti" is a visual narrative and a mirror reflecting the triumph of authenticity and the unyielding spirit of those who dare to be their authentic selves in an ever-evolving world. It is a tribute to my dear friend, myself, and all those who have faced adversity with unwavering determination.
