“Which one is more of a mother?” The question echoes as if a home with two fathers still needed the ghost of a woman to be valid. I asked my daughter to do my makeup: a simple, almost playful gesture. I see a face marked by lipstick, mascara, eyeliner — just a father in a wig. Makeup the fragility of masculinity, the absences we’re forced to perform, the arbitrariness of roles.
